"Seotud ilu"
Olavi sõna sixth exhibitionwith tauno kangro.
2024
The common theme of the joint exhibition is Shibari, or the Japanese art of bondage. In the images and sculptures, ropes have been used to tell various stories, express emotions, and convey experiences.
Shibari bondage art is used to tie up a person, giving the bound individual the opportunity to let go of control and surrender. The ropes create tensions, provide a chance to overcome oneself, and evoke various sensations. The ropes are an experience and a play with pain, beauty, shame, and arousal.
The photos feature a total of 31 models, almost all of whom were tied up and naked in front of the camera for the first time in their lives. All the models were brave and went through something profound, and this is captured in the photos.
Nearly ten models posed for Tauno Kangro, whom Olavi tied up, and based on those poses, the sculptures were then created. The bronze works can be admired at the exhibition.
In total, 41 brave nude models helped us create this art.
The exhibition features nearly 30 new nude photos by Olavi Sõna and nearly ten sculptures by Tauno Kangro, which are being presented for the first time.
Tauno Kangro is Estonia's most famous sculptor, whose granite and bronze sculptures can be found in all major and minor cities. For example: "The Happy Chimney Sweep" in front of Sõpruse Cinema, "The Resting One" in Schnelli Pond Park, "Suur Tõll" on Saaremaa, the Great Bull in Rakvere.
"Seotud Vabaks"
Olavi sõna fourth exhibition2023
The overarching theme of photographer Olavi Sõna's nude photo exhibition "Seotud vabaks" ("Bound to Be Free") is ropes. The photos utilize shibari, or the Japanese art of bondage. In shibari, specific braids and knots are used to tie up a person, creating various emotions and experiences in the bound individual. Through emotions, we feel alive, even if they are feelings we fear or push into the darkness.
The purpose of the exhibition is to evoke precisely these different feelings in the viewer. In fear and shame, much beauty and sexuality can be hidden. Being bound takes away freedom but provides security—like in relationships. Being bound can come with a sense of certainty, pain, pleasure, fear, shame, peace, connection—the entire spectrum of emotions.
The photos intertwine nude photography and shibari. The images do not directly depict a shibari session; rather, shibari techniques are used for symbolic purposes.
The exhibition took place in October 2023.
